Gonna break these chains around me
Gonna learn to fly again
May be hard, may be hard
But I’ll do it
When I’m back on my feet again

Soon these tears will all be dryin’
Soon these eyes will see the sun
Might take time, might take time
But I’ll see it
When I’m back on my feet again

Chorus:
When I’m back on my feet again
I’ll walk proud down this street again
And they’ll all look at me again
And they’ll see that I’m strong

Gonna hear the children laughing
Gonna hear the voices sing
Won’t be long, won’t be long
Till I hear them
When I’m back on my feet again

Gonna feel the sweet light of heaven
Shining down it’s light on me
One sweet day, one sweet day
I will feel it
When I’m back on my feet again

Chorus:

And I’m not gonna crawl again
I will learn to stand tall again
No I’m not gonna fall again
Cos I’ll learn to be strong

Soon these tears will all be dryin’
Soon these eyes will see the sun
Won’t be long, won’t be long
Till I see it
When I’m back on my feet again
When I’m back on my feet again
I’ll be back on my feet again

Back on My Feet Again -- Michael Bolton

The Day After

I'm trying to get over the disappointment of the non-promotion, and it's not easy. I can try to make myself feel better by saying things like "It wasn't meant to be" or "Maybe next time" but either way, it's tough to wait all this time and then not get what you wanted. But in the end, I think I didn't get the promotion because I really haven't been back at the casino long enough. After all, it has only been seven months. All I can do now is apply myself to supervising, and wait patiently for the next promotion. I may have fallen, but I just have to get up and keep walking forward. There's always next time.

Sunday, January 30, 2005

I prepared myself for the bad news and lo and behold the news was bad. I did not get the promotion. I had mixed feelings throughout the night at work. On one hand, I was obviously disappointed I did not get the position, considering that I was REQUESTED to apply from somebody at Head Office. However, I'm also flattered (for lack of a better word) that I was considered. All I can do now is apply myself and wait for the next promotion. I can only assume that I'll have a better chance the next time around.

Life goes on...

Midnight is Here (in about 4 hours)

I decided not to go to the chess tournament on the weekend. It would be fruitless because my mind would not be on the games, and I would be too tired at work. Instead, I went to dinner last night (Friday) with Lily and Mei, then went to Lily's house to play Big 2. We actually stayed up until 6am? Hmm, cool, just like I was working.

I went to bed at around 7am and had an incredibly wonderful sleep, waking up just before 5pm. I haven't had a relaxing sleep like that in a while, and I'm surprised I did considering the stress I have been through. Nevertheless, I'm pretty sure I'll find out tonight whether or not I got the floor manager position. I'm pessimistic but still hopeful. So I will sit here for another four hours before learning my fate.

Midnight is Near

I just finished talking to a friend who works in Richmond who also applied for the floor manager position. He was working tonight and on one of his breaks they gave him the "bad news" that he didn't get promoted. Unluckily (luckily?) I have two days off, so I'll either get the news when I work on Saturday....or they'll call me? But at least I'll know.

Meanwhile, to take my mind off of things, it's time for The Apprentice.

YES OR NO

Whoever said "no news is good news" is full of shit. No news just makes things more stressful. Thankfully I have two days off to relax and not think about it too much. It has affected my work and I'm a mess at times. JUST TELL ME YES OR NO.

Other than lunch with the lovely Lily, I don't have plans Thursday night. Perhaps I'll hang out with Albert again or something. I'm debating on whether or not to go to the chess tournament on the weekend. I haven't played in so long I'll probably suck, but who knows.

Bad News (Maybe)

My chances of getting the promotion just took a dip. Without getting into detail, there was a small restructuring at Head Office, and one of the departments basically got disbanded. As a result, two of its members suddenly got "promoted" to floor manager. So now from what I gather, there are only four more positions available. I don't like my chances. Either way, I wish they would just TELL ME. It has now been eleven days since my interview and I've lost sleep every night.

No News is Excruciating

There is STILL no news concerning the promotion. I have no choice but to go to work and try to concentrate. Tonight was tough, as I guess I had one of my off days. I was stuck closing tables with new dealers who were slow and uncoordinated. My stressful state didn't help matters at all.

The thing is, everybody in management seems to think that the news will come out this week, and I hope they are right. Whether the answer is yes or no, I JUST WANT TO KNOW! This is like hearing a doorbell and not being able to answer it. Meanwhile, the wait continues.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Carson

Johnny Carson passed away yesterday. I still remember staying up as a little kid watching The Tonight Show, and growing up with him. Nothing against Jay Leno, but the show just wasn't the same after Johnny left in 1992. Johnny and I seemed to share the same sense of humor. There were nights when I would laugh so hard I could barely breathe.

And now he's gone.

Can it Be?

Tonight I wore the new black suit, with a simple white shirt and gold tie. As usual, it was well liked.

Something weird happened. Two of the floor managers were practically congratulating me on getting the promotion, even though there has been no announcement. Perhaps they know something or have received some sort of an email from Head Office. This is odd because tomorrow is "Day 10" after my interview, and I was told that I would probably find out in 10 days whether or not I got the job. So we'll see.

Sharp Dressed Man

My new navy suit made its debut at work tonight, accompanied by the infamous hot pink shirt and a nice complementary pink/blue/white tie. Tomorrow will be the new black suit but I haven't decided on the shirt/tie combination yet. Somebody suggested a white shirt (boring?) with a yellow/gold tie. I'll see what mood I'm in. I'd been thinking about the LIGHT pink shirt.

Work has been a bit stressful lately, largely because of the unknown promotion. I'm feeling a bit paranoid at times that something will go wrong. I just want to know whether or not I get it. The wait is agonizing.

Elektra

I went to see Elektra with Albert, Ryan and Tanya. The movie was OK, not what I expected. This was more like one of those Japanese Anime things, featuring weird characters with strange powers. I didn't particularly enjoy any of the fighting sequences, but overall I guess the movie was 7/10. Jennifer Garner looked nice in her red outfit and the Oriental-looking Typhoid was gorgeous. Hey, any movie with two girls kissing can't be all that bad.

Couch Potato

Watching the early version of The Apprentice while waiting to go out for dinner and movie. It looks like "Street Smarts" will prevail over "Book Smarts" tonight but we'll see.

Tonight I get to see the lovely Jennifer Garner in Elektra.

I can't think of anything more to say so....see ya.

Rain Rain Go Away

The rain has been terrible around here. There was a mudslide in North Vancouver where my uncle lives. His house is OK (but obviously lots of mud) but the same can't be said for his neighbor. Evidently one of his neighbors died from the mudslide. That's sad and scary. At least my relatives are OK.

It looks like the next few days will be quite miserable weatherwise, but not enough to pass up my weekly Thursday lunch with Lily. I'll probably go see a movie with Albert tomorrow, now that he's by himself (it's a long story). And meanwhile I wait anxiously for that phone call from Head Office saying whether or not I got the floor manager position.

Until next time...

Life and Times of a Shopaholic

My apologies for not posting on the weekend. It was rather uneventful except for the fact that Lily and I went shopping (again) on Saturday). We went downtown to Pacific Center. We decided to go to Holt Renfrew and check out the Louis Vuitton section. I need a wallet, but they are so bloody expensive. However, LV rules so if I get the floor manager position, I'll definitely buy one. Lily ordered a nice purse which "only" cost $900 or so. I also went into the Hermes section, where they sell ties for ridiculous prices. No I didn't buy one.

It seems that everybody is assuming I'll get the floor manager position, which is good or bad. I guess I should prepare for an eventual promotion, but also prepare for NOT getting the job (in which case I shouldn't be disappointed). But it's almost like everybody is expecting I'll get it. We'll see.

I have an early start on Monday so I'll head to sleep early (as if 7am can be considered early).

Accepting Donations

I had lunch with Lily today, since I had the interview on Thursday. She originally wanted to go shopping downtown tomorrow (Saturday), but I mentioned that I was going to go to Metrotown to get some suits at Grafton. So we decided to do so at about 4pm after she was off work. We drove to Metrotown and I proceeded to buy two suits (one black, one navy) for $615 or so (both suits were 50% off). The weird thing was I was wearing my hot pink shirt at the time, and it matched quite well with the black suit. It's true what they say, anything goes with a black suit. We also did some random shopping; she bought some nice little pendants for her niece and we had a nice walk around the mall. Tomorrow we will continue our shopping excursions downtown before I work at 10:15pm.

I also bought a USB cable thing for my new phone, and just received my CD from eBay that has a bunch of wallpapers and ringtones for the phone. Hmm, shall I go with ABBA?

All I know is just like that my bank account has decreased by $700, so if anybody wants to donate to the "Make Jason Look Good" Fund, please go right ahead. Nighty night.

And Now the Waiting Begins

The interview went fairly well today, as I was fairly prepared for it. However, it's hard to say if my answers were exactly what they were looking for. By the way, I was interviewed by three (!) people at once; two people from Head Office and one of the shift managers at the Holiday Inn. It was intimidating at first but I managed to relax myself. Now we'll see what happens, and there's nothing else more I can do at this point.

The Final Countdown

I'm off for the interview of my life now. Wish me luck.

Point of No Return

Here I am, sitting at home at 11:30pm, trying to calm my nerves as I await my big interview tomorrow in exactly 12 hours. There's nothing more I can do now but accept whatever cards I am dealt. If I fail and don't get the position, that's OK. I'll still be a supervisor and can apply the next time. But if I impress the powers that be enough, I'll see myself promoted. It's strange, part of me wants to get promoted and part of me is still hesitant about moving up so quickly. But when an opportunity comes your way, you have to grab it. So we'll see what happens tomorrow.

Destiny Finally Awaits

I have an interview on Thursday morning (11:30am) for the relief floor manager position! I guess there's no lunch with Lily (I actually found something more important than lunch with Lily!) but we'll probably reschedule or something.

Now I have less than 3 days to prepare. I hate interviews but I know they are a part of almost any job application, so all I can do is try my best. Hopefully the result will be something good.

Meanwhile, I'm just relaxing at home before an 11:15pm start at work.

PINK

I forgot to report on the debut of my hot pink shirt two nights ago (Saturday). I definitely turned a few heads. Some were shocked to say the least, but generally the shirt got very good reviews. Somebody said "it takes a real man to wear pink". In a way that's right, some people wear the same old crap every day and they look dull. My philosophy is to be different. Tonight I wore my purple shirt with the olive green Armani and a perfectly matched purple/green tie.

Unfortunately the next three nights I'm stuck wearing a white shirt and black pants, as I'm dealing! In fact I have 6 dealing shifts out of 10 this schedule; quite a refreshing change from all the supervising.

I am still waiting for "the interview" for the floor manager position, but inside sources seem to indicate I have an extremely good chance to get it. And if I don't, then that's fine, because in a way I almost hope I don't get it. To achieve such a high position in so short a time is quite overwhelming. But whatever happens happens.

Loud Pink

Michael picked me up at about 12:30pm and we went to Metrotown with her little daughter Renee. We went to the pet store to look at the little kitties and doggies and fishies, then had some lunch at the new and improved Food Fair. Then it was time for Uncle Jason to buy that loud pink shirt and equally loud pink tie. Do I have the nerve to wear it tonight? we'll see.

It's hard to believe it has snowed in Vancouver for four days straight now, almost as hard to believe that it was snowing Vegas too! What's going on?

OK time for a little nap before work.

Was it Worth it?

I had dinner with Michael after he was off work at 9pm because he had the money for me from the football pool. I'm rich! I'm rich! We went to the Cactus Club, the restaurant with the coolest washrooms around.

Afterwards we had nothing else to do, so what else is left but to go to the casino to play some hold'em. We both had lousy cards but somewhow both managed to make money. Michael made an astounding $20 and I earned an extra $5 for 2 hours of work. Yuk. I'd have lost if I didn't practically force myself to play A-8. Luckily the third and fourth cards were 8's.

Snow?

What the hell is going on? Is this Vancouver? Anyways, I guess for once I hope I don't have any shifts in Coquitlam, because I hear there's a lot more snow there. It's tough enough for me to walk four blocks to work at the Holiday Inn.

In other news, my new Motorola phone came today and is charging as we speak. Now I have a camera phone and must now make the important decision of picking a decent ringtone. This phone has MP3-quality ringtones (even voice ones!).

And now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

The Bad News

I went to visit the eye doctor today and the bad news was revealed. I have a form of glaucoma (not sure which one yet). At least it was diagnosed early so it's not like I'm going to go blind any time soon. But the eye will get worse over time and now it is imperative that I take steps to control the deterioration. The doctor has prescribed certain eyedrops and she will see in three months if they work.

For now I just can't worry about it, but I do have to take the drops every day. Life can be a bitch sometimes, but I can't let it bother me. On one hand, I must keep the prevention steps ongoing, but on the other hand I must ensure life goes on. If I'm lucky, I'll have my eyesight until I'm 100, who knows.

I spent most of the day at Metrotown just walking around. I considered buying an extremely "bright" loud pink shirt, but couldn't match it with anything I have. Even I will find it difficult to wear this to work. But I never back down from a challenge so we'll see. I was going to go see a movie but there was nothing that jumped out at me, other than Meet the Fockers, but I wasn't in the mood.

No More Bets

I have a late shift at 11:15pm, but instead of supervising tonight I am dealing! It is a nice change from standing around and pacing and watching your tables. As a dealer you get to participate more. I have no idea what I'm be dealing but they're all fine with me.

In the meantime I'm watching The Amazing Race before getting ready for work. I love this show.

So Close

Well I ended up winning $750. I would have tied for second place (and won $1125 instead) but the New York Giants scored a touchdown with 10 seconds left in the game. Boo. It was so close, but hey, $750 is $750!

Work was hectic but what else is new. At times it almost seemed like management was "grooming" me to be the floor manager, could it be that I've already been accepted and they are just getting me ready? Who knows, it's all speculation at the moment.

Off to bed now, I'm having lunch with Glenn, and if I'm not too tired, I might go to Metrotown since I didn't go today.

Bad News and Good News

I didn't get first place in the football pool, but at the moment I am guaranteed third place overall, which is good for $750. There is one more game left in about 30 minutes, and if Dallas covers the spread, I will tie for second place, which means $1125 instead of $750. Wish me luck!

Dreaming of Money

It's 9 in the morning and I haven't slept yet. I had breakfast with some coworkers and just got home. I'm off to bed. When I wake up, I could be $4000 richer! The casino football pool ends this week, and currently I'm in 3rd place (which is still good for $750), one point behind 2nd place ($1500) and two points behind 1st place ($4000). It's a matter of who gets the most points this week, so we'll see.

Good luck to me.

Another One of Those Quiz Things

OK here's a fun little thing I got in an email from a friend. Have fun with it.

Follow the directions very carefully and do not cheat.
Make a wish before beginning the test, and answer the questions as you go along.

There are only four questions and if you see them all before finishing, you will not have honest results. Go down slowly and do each exercise as you scroll down. Don't look ahead. Get pencil and paper to write your answers as you go along. You will need it at the end. This is an honest questionnaire which will tell you a lot about your true self. Give an answer for each item.

1) Put the following animals in order of preference: Cow, Horse, Pig, Sheep, Tiger
.
.
.
.
.

2) Write one word that describes each of the following:
DOG
CAT
RAT
COFFEE
SEA
.
.
.
.
.

3) Thinks of someone different (who also knows you and is important to you) that you can relate to the following colours (do you repeat any answer twice; name just one person for each colour): Yellow, Orange, Red, White, Green
.
.
.
.
.

4) Finally, write down your favorite number and favorite day of the week.
.
.
.
.
.

Before continuing, repeat your wish.
.
.
.
.
.

1) The order you list defines your priorities in life.

Cow Signifies CAREER
Tiger Signifies PRIDE
Sheep Signifies LOVE
Horse Signifies FAMILY
Pig Signifies MONEY

2) Your description of dog implies your own personality.
Your description of cat implies the personality of your partner.
Your description of rat implies the personality of your enemies.
Your description of coffee is how you interpret sex.
Your description of the sea implies your own life.

3) Yellow: Someone you will never forget
Orange: Someone you consider your true friend
Red: Someone that you really love
White: Your twin soul
Green: Someone that you will re member for the rest of your life

4) You have to send this message to as many persons as your favourite number and your wish will come true on the day that you put. This is what the Dalai Lama has said about the Millennium - just take a few seconds to read it and think. Do not put away this message, the mantra will come out from your hands in the next 96 hours. You will have a very pleasant surprise. This is true, even if you are not superstitious.
Please do this. It is fascinating.

SEND THIS E-MAIL MANTRA TO AT LEAST FIVE PERSONS AND YOUR LIFE WILL IMPROVE

0-4 persons: Your life will improve slightly

5-9 persons: Your life will improve to your liking

9-14 persons: You will have at least 5 surprises in the next three weeks

15 or more persons: Your life will improve drastically and all thatyou have always dreamed will take shape.

Welcome 2005

Well it's 12:37am on January 1, 2005 and I'm still at home. In the end, my friends all decided on their own activities and I guess for me, I opted for a peaceful night at home, chatting with friends and reminiscing with retro videos. In a way it was appropriate because with all the sad news in Asia it almost didn't feel right to go party. That's not to say I don't think people should have had fun. New Year's Eve only comes once a year. But this year peace and quiet were ideal for me.

I look forward to a hopefully better 2005. I still haven't heard about the floor manager position, but yes or no I'm flattered to have been considered. I still haven't heard from the eye specialist regarding my test (not until January 6) but que sera sera, whatever will be will be.

I'll probably head to bed early, then head to Metrotown for some January 1 shopping.

Wow, 42 minutes into the year and nothing's gone wrong yet....
